If you've never been to those glorious white sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, you are in for a treat. There's a multitude of lodging choices - condominiums, motels, bed and breakfasts, or private beach house rentals. There are many attractions to keep you busy if you are not just a total beach bum.
Born in Alabama, I've had the pleasure of many trips to those sugar beaches starting before it became the commercial success it is today. Our young family spent many happy times and made lots of wonderful memories at the old Lighthouse Motel (click link below; beach front, sleeps 6).
It wasn't fancy, but it was on the beach and it had a pool. Each trip, we'd have to drive the 20 or so miles out to Fort Morgan, site of the civil war Battle of Mobile Bay, where we'd spend endless hours exploring the grounds and fort. Walking the beach looking for shells was another sometimes twice-daily routine.
Nowadays, recovery from Katrina is progressing and the area appears to be booming. Our latest visit was the week after Christmas, 2006, and we feasted our eyes on all the colorful, new homes being built on the beach. We also feasted at The Shrimp Basket. They have great po'boys! Zeke's buffet on a Sunday morning is also a favorite, as is Lulu's on the river.

If shopping is your thing, shops abound in the area and the new outlet mall is a shopper's paradise.

Have you ever been to the Gulf Shores area? Did you go when the sun was so hot that the sand scorches the soles of your feet if you forgot your flip flops? Maybe you prefer the fall of the year when most vacationers have left and the beach is a peaceful haven. Where's your favorite place to eat? What's your best memory?
