Key West - A Perfect Winter Getaway
Author: Steven Chabotte
Key
West is a great place to get away for a relaxing winter
holiday. It has everything you need to overcome the winter blues
- sun, sand, warm waters, great dining, a bit of history and the
envy of your friends when you come back with that famous Florida
tan. Whether you are thinking of a quick weekend or a more
relaxing week vacation, Key West has enough variety to keep you
busy the whole time - and enough quiet spots for those who just
want to lay back and absorb the rays.
Key West's beaches - with their warm and crystal clear waters -
are perfect for swimming, jet skiing, snorkeling, and scuba
diving. Several luxur
y resorts in Key West offer first-class accommodations and
water related activities for the whole family. Visitors can find
a variety of activities close to shore or they can take one of
the many glass-bottom boat tours - a must do to see the wonders
of the underwater tropical paradise that is just offshore. Many
people also hire boats to take them scuba diving in the
world-famous reefs. And many offer quick scuba diving lessons so
that even the rank beginners can get up close and personal with
the underwater adventures all around Key West. For the less
adventurous, the Key West Aquarium will lets you see the local
marine life up close and also offers dozens of hands-on
activities for children. It makes for a great family day
adventure.
The island itself boasts has many more remarkable attractions
for the entire family and the island is small enough that
visitors can see them all if they have the ambition.
Probably the best way to get a feel for all Key West offers is
to take one of the many Key West Historic Tours. These tours are
great fun and will give you a good feel for all the island has
to offer. For the more adventurous, there is even a ghost tour.
But probably the most famous one is the Conch Tour Train. This
tour vehicle is designed to look like an old train, and it takes
visitors all over the island. This tour is a must for families
who want a great introduction to the most popular parts of the
island.
No trip to Key West would be complete without a visit to the
Ernest Hemmingway House. This house was home to the famous
author when he created some of his best-known novels. The house
is quite colorful and is the current home to dozens of local
cats that call it their home. As you travel around Key West and
visit its many landmarks, do not be surprised to see plaques
about Hemmingway scattered here and there. He spent quite a bit
of time at the hot spots during his time.
The Audubon House is an authentic 19th century home that has
been fully restored and remodeled. It is filled with genuine
antiques and paintings by famed naturalist John James Audubon.
For anyone who has heard of Audubon or who has seen
reproductions of some of his works, the trip to this house will
give you memories to last a lifetime.
There are also a variety of annual winter activities in Key
West. Here are some of the more famous ones that are held every
December..
In December, you have the Key West Holiday Parade in Old Town.
This is a family oriented parade celebrating the holiday. You
also have the Key West Lighted Boat Parade which features a
variety of decorated boats cruising Key West Harbor at night -
each one trying to outdo the other as the best decorated boat.
And of course, December would not be complete without a Key West
New Year's Eve celebration. Just about every restaurant, hotel
and bar will have a celebration and many of them have themes to
their celebrations so you can pick and choose to get just the
right mood for bringing in the new year. Experience the conch
shell drop at Sloppy Joe's Bar or the "wench" drop at
Schooner Wharf Bar, and for the more adventurous, the red high
heel drop with drag queen Sushi at Bourbon Street Pub/ New
Orleans House.
