Places To Rest Your Nose Near Mount Rushmore, South Dakota
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a popular travel destination. The carving of this giant granite formation began in 1927 and ended in 1941. It represents the first 150 years of American history. It was originally conceived as a means of attracting tourism to South Dakota.
The sculpture, from left to right, features George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Each of their heads is sixty feet.
It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966 and it is now operated by the National Park Service.
