Nose Scents

Ah, nose scents....when one of my favorite magazines, Southern Living, came in the mail, one of the first articles that caught my attention right away was an interesting one relating to nose scents by Karen Lingo.

She tells us about a lavender farm in Tulsa, Oklahoma and how they grow fields of lavender and turn those fragrant blooms into soaps, wreaths, sachets, and oil which they sell in their shop. There's even a Lavender Festival in June where you can cut your own lavender. Beautiful Lavender Photo

Can you just imagine the nose scents in a field of lavender? One would surely be stress free and mellowed out after that experience.

She suggests adding lavender to a warm bath or tucking sachets into your linen closet. You can read her article in the June 2007 issue of Southern Living, page 34. There's even a link to Lavender Hill Farm & Vineyard's website in the article: http://www.lavenderhillfarm.net

If you're in the area go by and have a fun day at the farm breathing in all that wonderful aroma of lavender. You're sure to be stress free when you leave.

Here's a few more lavender farms you might like to check out. Maybe there's one in your area.

A fragrance allergy would be a such a nuisance if you love colognes and perfumes like I do. Right now, my favorite perfume is Ralph by Ralph Lauren - you know, it's in that pretty blue bottle. Please click here to read about Fragrance And Perfume.

Summer Days And Scents

Well, reading that article about lavender farms got me to thinking about nose scents.

I'm old enough to remember hanging clothes out on the clothesline to dry. There are no dryer sheets around that can beat the fresh, clean scent that clothes have when dried in the gentle breeze of a sunshiny spring day (not that I do that anymore, I have a dryer).

Another smell that I love is the smell of the ocean. One of my all time favorite places to visit is

Gulf Shores, Alabama. We knew it before it became so commercial and popular and I have so many good memories of family vacations there with our children.

Ah, just to lie down on those white, sugar beaches, close my eyes, feel the gentle breeze wafting across my body, hear the steady, rhymic lap of the gulf water brushing against the shoreline and smell that salty water. It must be heaven.

Oreo's Skunk Encounter

One of the worst nose scents to me is a skunk smell. Which leads me to a story about Oreo.

My husband, Philip, loves Oreo and calls her our granddog. Oreo is an Old English Sheepdog that belongs to my daughter and her family. Oreo is so gentle and loving.

They lived in a rural area at the time and Oreo obviously came too close to a skunk. Being the loving dog that she is, Oreo wanted to immediately share the scent with her family. They washed her, they washed their clothes, they washed her again in tomato juice (someone said that would work), they trashed their clothes, they washed her again. She was miserable, they were miserable. The smell eventually went away but my daughter surely did burn alot of scented candles for a few days.

And Oreo, these days she lives in a new house, not as rural, and stays inside most of the time. She's getting older and I can't imagine not having her in the family.

Birthdays And Fragrance

Speaking of my husband Philip, it's getting near his birthday. This is a milestone one - his 65th. You know those little fragrance samples that come in magazines or sometimes, the Sunday paper - well, I've been saving one for months. It smells wonderful to me. It's a little pricy but I'm splurging a bit on this birthday. The only thing is, I don't know if that scent will smell good on him. Oh, well, if it doesn't, I guess he can use it on Oreo.

Worker Bees Are Controlled By Scent

Did you know that queen bees control their worker bees by scent? They secrete a substance similar to dopamine that keeps the young worker bees close to home. You can read more of this new research online at Sciencemag.org. (Just search queen bees).

More and more, our nostrils are being targeted by retailers - from "scratch and sniff" ads, to fragrance samples in magazines, scent can touch us emotionally and make us spend those big bucks before we leave the mall.

And I didn't even mention the nose scents you experience at the food court in the malls - mainly because I'm trying to diet and don't even want to think about food.

Babies know their mother's scent.

I recently read an article about babies and smell. Researchers say that babies learn their mother's scent very early in life. It's one way babies bond with their mothers. You can click here to read the whole article.
