Considering a "Nose Job?" - Know The Facts Before You Commit

Author: Michele Ellingsen

One of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in theUnited States is rhinoplasty - the reshaping of a nose, oftenreferred to as a "nose job". Right now, about two hundredthousand Americans decide to change the shape of their nosesevery year, and this number is ever increasing.

The reshaping of the nose can do much to enhance your looks aswell as your body image. But of course, like other cosmeticprocedures, you should not expect changes in your appearance tochange your entire life. Still, our self-esteem is oftenaffected by our looks, so it is not uncommon for certain partsof our anatomy to bother us. For men and women alike the nose isoften a source of unhappiness. When the nose is out ofproportion or has certain characteristics that make it lessattractive to the eye, we often think about changing it.

The nose is the most prominent feature on our face so whether weare viewed head on or in profile, the nose is the center ofattention. Typical nasal problems that are addressed throughrhinoplasty operations are large noses ... a bump on the nose... a nose that is too wide or is crooked ... a nose where theend is too large or hangs down ... and the "ski jump" nose.Sometimes a patient's nose has a combination of several of theseconcerns.

The best nose reshaping is one in which your nose still lookstrue to your ethnic background and to your facial bonestructure. So it's important that you have reasonableexpectations about what kind of result is surgically possiblefor your face.

To flip through a magazine and pick out a nose shape that youwould like to have is unrealistic. A very large nose simplycan't be replaced with a very small one. You don't want to go toa surgeon where every nasal surgery result looks the same. Youwant to find a surgeon who knows how to create a more normal andbeautiful nose that is right for you.

When you visit a board certified plastic surgeon and talk to himor her about nasal surgery there are some basic points toexplore. First and foremost you want to see actual "before andafter" photographs of that doctor's patient results. Then, as atool to assess your surgeon's skills, you want to know how longthe surgeon has been in practice and how much of his or herpractice involves nasal surgery.

You'll also want your surgeon to offer "imaging." Throughimaging, the doctor uses computer software to create - on animage of your own face - a picture of what is reasonablyachievable for you, both face-on and in profile. With the helpof this visual aid, you'll have a clearer understanding of whatyour final results will be, eliminating nasty surprises anddisappointments.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, be sure to thoroughlyresearch all the most common procedures so you'll know exactlywhat you're asking for and what your surgeon is recommending. The more you know about rhinoplasty, the better your choiceswill be.

Note:

The specific risks and the suitability of nasal surgeryfor a given individual can be determined only at the time ofconsultation with a surgeon. All procedures have some degree ofrisk. The information provided here is not a substitute for aconsultation.

A detailed research done before any cosmetic procedure isadvisable; knowledge of the surgery is an advantage to yourdecision. Visit La Jolla Cosmetic Surgery Centre at http://www.ljcsc.com for moredetails on La Jolla rhinoplasty.

Considering Rhinoplasty Surgery - The Different Procedures

Author: Susan Chen

Birth defect or accidents may unfortunately leave you with arather unshapely nose that does not match your face well inshape or size. Rhinoplasty surgery, which is a branch of plasticsurgery, was developed initially for corrective surgery on thenose to fit in better proportion to the face. This surgery wasalso intended to correct the shape of the nose to eliminate theproblem of constricted breathing. Apart from these benefits fromcorrective surgery, rhinoplasty in recent years is increasinglybeing viewed as a way to bring aesthetic changes to the face.

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures today, with hundreds of thousands of patients undergoing rhinoplastysurgery each year. Despite its popularity, rhinoplasty is viewedas one of the most difficult cosmetic procedures. Motives forhaving rhinoplasty surgery may differ, be it improvement in thebreathing process, reduction or enhancement in the nose size, oreradication of injury marks. Depending on the patient'scondition the rhinoplasty surgeon can use local or generalanesthesia. This nose reshaping procedure generally does nottake more than two hours in most of the cases.

There are two main techniques involved in the procedure ofrhinoplasty, namely closed and open rhinoplasty.

Closed Rhinoplasty

If a minor reshaping is required, most rhinoplasty surgeonsprefer to make incisions within the nose and then to insert aninstrument that separates the skin of the nose from the bone andcartilage. After being exposed in this manner, the bone andcartilage are removed. They are then reshaped and rearranged togive the nose the desired shape. After the rearrangement iscomplete, the nose tissues are spread over the newly shapedstructures. Towards the end of the procedure the originalincisions are closed up.

Open Rhinoplasty

When it involves a major nose reshaping job, rhinoplastysurgeons prefer not to make incisions inside the nose. In caseof a major reshaping, the incisions are made over an area of thenose called the columella which is a vertical strip of skin thatseparates the nostrils. This is a comparatively more complexprocedure and referred to as "open" rhinoplasty.

After the reshaping of the nose is complete, incisions areclosed up immediately in both the cases. Some puffy materialsare used inside the nose to support the renewed structure alongthe nasal air passages. In addition to that, an external splintis also applied to the nose for at least six to eight days tohelp the nose keep its new shape. This splint also helps thenose through the healing process.
