Train Tours - A Good Place To Rest Your Nose

Have you ever 'rested your nose' on a train?

Train tours? I'd never even heard of that term until I was an adult. Growing up in a small town in the South back in the 40's and 50's the only trains I ever saw were the ones that came through our town regularly. However, it wasn't the passenger cars that fascinated me. I was in awe of the dining cars-the white tablecloths at each table (each with a vase of flowers)-the uniformed waiters-and most of all, the passengers themselves sitting at those tables. Surely they must be wealthy to travel in this mode of transportation. One day, I'd dream, I would ride the train and sit in the dining car and wave to little kids as we passed by.

I finally got my first train ride in the early 70's - from El Paso, Texas to Los Angeles, California. I ate in the dining car only there wasn't any kids to wave to in the desert, although it was fun watching the jackrabbits scampering away from the vicinity of the train as we past by. My latest dream is to travel by train up the east coast into Canada, go over to Nova Scotia and back, then across Canada and down the west coast to San Diego, California.

Do Something Different - Travel by Train
Author: David Pierce

Traveling by train is a different and unique way of seeing the countryside that almost seems a part of an era long past. Back in the early part of the century train travel was the most common way of seeing the country, but in our era of cars and airplanes not as many people ride the train as once did. If you are one of the lucky ones that does ride the train, you'll appreciate the scenic beauty of the nation.

Imagine chugging along at 60 miles per hour in a comfortable coach car with padded seats, a cold drink in your hand and a soft pillow below your head. Imagine watching the cows in the fields as you pass by, and requesting another mint julep from the waiter as he comes on by. You will know that all the while, you'll travel in comfort until the next stop, and then have plenty of time to visit. In the US Amtrak provides train service to most major cities. Using Amtrak allows a passenger to travel in comfort. In the US you can go from New York to California, from sea to shining sea, and all points in between, traveling in comfort. Adding cities and regions to your "been there, done that" list, like Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Dallas, New Orleans, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angels, Sacramento, Seattle, and San Francisco.

When visiting European locations, the train system is even more extensive. A favorite vacation method in Europe is purchase of a Eurorail pass, or Britrail if traveling in the UK. A Eurorail pass gives you unlimited travel on trains throughout all of Europe, and many college age kids fill up a backpack with a few clothes and canned goods, buy a Eurorail pass and hit the track. Imagine taking a train trip to Paris, spending the day visiting the Eiffel tower and other tourist attractions, and then when evening comes jumping the train and sleeping, only to depart when you arrive at a destination. With luck and the right train, you will have arrived in the South of France, perhaps Nice, or St. Tropez or San Rafael. Jump off the train, carry your backpack to the beach, claim a spot of sand and jump in the water of the Mediterranean Sea to cool off. You are on the legendary French Riviera where people pay thousands of dollars a week for vacation spots, but you've got a little piece of sand to sleep on for free, and a train to jump on when you get ready. Try swimming in the ocean or windsurfing and be sure to wear your sun tan lotion.

When done, hop the train again with your Eurorail pass and hit Amsterdam, the most famous city in Holland. Eat some of the famous Dutch croquettes and French fries served with mayonnaise, and take a walking tour of the city. You'll pass the famous Anne Frank house, and the Heineken brewery. Take a tour of each while you are there, and then try the famous museums, like the Reiksmuseum, and the Vincent Van Gogh. After a few days in Amsterdam, then hit the train again and head to Germany, if possible down to the southern part, in Bavaria. Visit beautiful Munich. See the Olympic Village and if you are fortunate enough to have come at the right time of the year, visit a famous Bavarian beer fest. The most famous is Octoberfest, but there are many small fests held at different times of the year. Try one and see why so many people enjoy Germany. Take the train south to Augsburg and visit a city named after the Roman emperor Augustus, with narrow brick paved streets and friendly people. Go a little further south to Garmish Partenkirchen and visit the ski slopes in the winter, or go backpacking and hiking in the summer. Germany offers something for everyone.

Traveling by train offers a vacation experience, whether in America or Europe, that no other method of transport can match. You have all the comfort of home in your train car, wonderful meals served when you wish in the dining car, great friendly people to visit with, other cultures to get to know, and best of all, someone else does the driving. Try train travel for the best vacation ever.

Traveling By Train For Your Vacations
Author: Peter J. Mason

A different and charming way of seeing the countryside, during vacations, that almost seems a part of an era long past is by traveling by train. During the early years of the century a journey by train travel was the usual way of seeing the countryside, but in today's jet age very few people travel by train like they did before. It is only those, still lucky enough to ride a train, who can appreciate the beauty of the landscape.

Where else could you have the luxury of driving 60 miles per hour in a luxury coach car with comfortable seats, cold drink in hand and a pillow to rest your head, and people to pamper you silly? You could watch cows in the fields as travel, while having drinks served to your taste. Most major cities in the US are provided train service by Amtrak. The Amtrak passenger travels in the utmost comfort. You can add more cities and regions to your list of "been there, seen that", places like Salt Lake City, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, Sacramento, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Nashville, San Francisco, Kansas City, Denver, St. Louis, New Orleans, and Dallas.

European locations are invariably better connected by the railway system. Most people in Europe travel by buying a Euro rail pass, or Brit rail while traveling through UK. By buying a Euro rail pass you are guaranteed unlimited train travel throughout Europe. College kids having a Euro rail pass pack a backpack with few basics, and hit the track. You could take a train to Paris, spend the day visit the Eiffel tower apart from other tourist spots, and catch a train in the evening, sleep in peace only to depart when you are done with traveling. If you are on the right train, at the right time, you could be in the South of France, even San Rafael, St. Tropez or Nice. Sight seeing here could be as simple as jumping off the train, claiming a patch on the beach and jumping into the Mediterranean Sea for a swim!

Once you are done, flash your Euro rail pass and hop onto the train again to Amsterdam, visiting Holland's biggest and greatest city. Having lived it up in Amsterdam, board the train again heading towards Germany, possible down south towards Bavaria. Drop by Munich and feast on its wonderful heritage. Peep into the Olympic Village; and hope that you are lucky to visit during the renowned Bavarian beer fest, so you can have a blast.

A train journey offers a relaxing and unique experience, be it in Europe or America, like no other transport can even compare with. A train is as luxurious as your home, with delicious food at your service from the dining car, friendly people for company, a variety of cultures to learn, to top it all you are being chauffeur-driven. A train journey could truly be an experience by itself.
